Psalm 15 – Praying the Psalms Project

This Psalm reveals to us, that it is important to God who we surround ourselves with.  We are created for community, with God and with others.  When we find ourselves far away from the Lord, wondering how to get back, we must take a good look around us.

In my life surrounding myself with God seeking women has dug my tent pegs deep.   They are women who have corrected, challenged, encouraged, inspired and prayed for me.

Mentoring is biblical, the Lord knew we would need encouraged in this journey called life.

Psalm 15

Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent?
    Who may live on your holy mountain?

The one whose walk is blameless,
    who does what is righteous,
    who speaks the truth from their heart;
whose tongue utters no slander,
    who does no wrong to a neighbor,
    and casts no slur on others;
who despises a vile person
    but honors those who fear the Lord;
who keeps an oath even when it hurts,
    and does not change their mind;
who lends money to the poor without interest;
    who does not accept a bribe against the innocent.

Whoever does these things
    will never be shaken.

Oh Lord, I want to camp out with You?

But I need Your help –

To walk blameless

To do what is right

To have truth in my heart and speak it from my lips

To be a woman who does not slander others

Who does no wrong to those around me

Who never gossips

Help me to separate myself from those who are mean spirited.

Connect me with those who honor and fear You.

Who go to great lengths to honor their promises and don’t change their minds.

Who care for the poor and never look to profit from their distress

For they will never be shaken

Who I surround myself with matters to You.

I want to be a woman who is never shaken, who camps out with You. – Amen

Psalm 14-Praying the Psalms Project

Many proclaim belief in God with their mouth, what do we say in our hearts?

I am reminded today that the Lord looks down from heaven on all mankind – looking for those who understand and seek Him.

He looks past what we say with our lips, and looks into our hearts.  There is no hiding what our hearts say.

He Sees All –  The Evil –  The Righteous – Sees it All

If we think we can fool the Lord, we are fooling ourselves.

Psalm 14

For the director of music. Of David.

The fool says in his heart,
    “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven
    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.
All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.

Do all these evildoers know nothing?

They devour my people as though eating bread;
    they never call on the Lord.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
    When the Lord restores his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

Psalm 14

Father, You see the fools of this world – the ones who say – ‘There is no God’

You see the people who are corrupt and vile who do nothing good.

 Your eyes look over the earth, You see those who understand and seek You.

Some days it feels like all have turned away from you.

Is there even one person doing good in the world today?

Am I that one person?  I want to be!

I believe that when those who do evil, who devour people and never call on You;

When they see Your righteous children, somewhere inside they feel a sense of dread.

They oppress the poor and cause them more trouble.

You Lord, see it all and You are the Refuge for the poor.

Salvation for all the World came from Zion, His name is Jesus.

Jesus is how you have restored your people.  Because of Him we can rejoice!

– Amen

Psalm 13 – Praying the Psalms Project

Have you ever wrestled with your own thoughts until you are completely exhausted?

I have.

Have you ever wondered if God has forgotten you?

I have.

Have you ever been waiting on and answer?

I have.

Have you ever felt like you are loosing at life?

I have

David, the man after God’s own heart, felt these things too.

Psalm 13

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?
    How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
    and day after day have sorrow in my heart?
    How long will my enemy triumph over me?

Look on me and answer, Lord my God.
    Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,”
    and my foes will rejoice when I fall.

But I trust in your unfailing love;
    my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
    for he has been good to me.

There Are DaysWe Move ForwardByLooking Back and Giving Thanks

Lord, I feel like You have forgotten me.   Are you hiding from me?

I can’t stand to wrestle with the thoughts in my mind for one more minute.

My heart is sad and heavy.

How long will all of my anxieties triumph over me?

Will you give me an answer to my questions?

Lord, pull me out of the darkness with your everlasting light.

So that my enemies cannot say they have overcome me or laugh with joy when I fall.

I trust in You and Your unfailing love for me, Lord.

I can rejoice in my heart, because my salvation comes from You.

I will turn from my sadness and sing Your praise, Lord.

When I look back upon my life, I can see that You have been good to me.

 – Amen

Psalm 10 – Praying the Psalms Project

David is back to battling the enemy in full force.  Honestly, I thought to myself, again?

The Lord has reminded me of this –  I am blessed beyond measure to live in freedom.  There are many, many men, women and children living today who are under this kind of oppression.  Who live under the bonds of a physical enemy, who has stolen their freedom.

Those of us who are free, we are called to pray and call attention to these injustices.

To bridge the gap, for the long haul, until we see justice and freedom come.

Psalm 10

Why, Lord, do you stand far off?
    Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,
    who are caught in the schemes he devises.
He boasts about the cravings of his heart;
    he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.
In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
    in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
His ways are always prosperous;
    your laws are rejected by him;
    he sneers at all his enemies.
He says to himself, “Nothing will ever shake me.”
    He swears, “No one will ever do me harm.”

His mouth is full of lies and threats;
    trouble and evil are under his tongue.
He lies in wait near the villages;
    from ambush he murders the innocent.
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
    like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;
    he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
10 His victims are crushed, they collapse;
    they fall under his strength.
11 He says to himself, “God will never notice;
    he covers his face and never sees.”

12 Arise, Lord! Lift up your hand, O God.
    Do not forget the helpless.
13 Why does the wicked man revile God?
    Why does he say to himself,
    “He won’t call me to account”?
14 But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted;
    you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;
    you are the helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked man;
    call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
    that would not otherwise be found out.

16 The Lord is King for ever and ever;
    the nations will perish from his land.
17 You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;
    you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed,
    so that mere earthly mortals
    will never again strike terror.

I have to say Lord, sometimes it feels like You are standing far, far off.

When things are falling apart, where are You?

Greedy men and women roam the earth, scheming and hunting down the weak.

Their only desire is to fill their hearts with every craving they have.  All they do is consume.

They are so full of pride, they do not even think of You

How is it, that they are always prosperous, even though they reject Your laws,  sneering all the while?

They believe that no harm will ever come to them, they seem secure.

Yet, they lie and they threaten.  They enjoy trouble as they lay in wait for their victims

Their helpless victims are crushed, dragged off against their will.

The wicked are too strong for them and they collapse.

The wicked think that You will never notice, that You  cover Your face and do not see what they do.

I’m bridging the gap today Lord, I am calling on You.

Calling on You to remember the helpless.

The wicked do not think you will ever call them to an account.

But You, God, You See

You see those who are afflicted.  You see their their trouble.

You hold their grief in Your Hand.

Victims commit themselves to you; You help the ones who have no fathers.

You are the Father to the fatherless.

The wicked, You have plans for them.

You will break their arm and call them to account.

They thought they would never be found out, but You have found them.

You are the only King who will reign forever and ever.

There will come a day, when every nation will be gone from this earth.

You will remain, Lord.

You Hear,  You Listen – to the cries of the afflicted and You send Your encouragement.

Your are the Defender – to the fatherless and the oppressed.

There will come a day that mere mortals – will never again bring terror to this world.

Psalm 9 – Praying the Psalms Project

We woke to almost a foot of snow this morning.  Before the big digging out begins, lets just snuggle in, in the quiet, giving thanks and rejoicing in our wonderful Lord.

Psalm 9

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Death of the Son.” A psalm of David.

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
    I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and rejoice in you;
    I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.

My enemies turn back;
    they stumble and perish before you.
For you have upheld my right and my cause,
    sitting enthroned as the righteous judge.
You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked;
    you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
Endless ruin has overtaken my enemies,
    you have uprooted their cities;
    even the memory of them has perished.

The Lord reigns forever;
    he has established his throne for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness
    and judges the peoples with equity.
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
    a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 Those who know your name trust in you,
    for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

11 Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion;
    proclaim among the nations what he has done.
12 For he who avenges blood remembers;
    he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted.

13 Lord, see how my enemies persecute me!
    Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,
14 that I may declare your praises
    in the gates of Daughter Zion,
    and there rejoice in your salvation.

15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
    their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.
16 The Lord is known by his acts of justice;
    the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.
17 The wicked go down to the realm of the dead,
    all the nations that forget God.
18 But God will never forget the needy;
    the hope of the afflicted will never perish.

19 Arise, Lord, do not let mortals triumph;
    let the nations be judged in your presence.
20 Strike them with terror, Lord;
    let the nations know they are only mortal.

Psalm 9

Lord my heart is overwhelmed with thanks to you.

I will use my voice to tell everyone I meet of Your wonderful deeds.

Because of You I can rejoice and sing praise.

You are the Most High – There is not one who is greater than You

Your praises will always be on my lips!

I have come to know that I do have an enemy – one for sure.

You cause my enemy to stumble and fall back.

You see the destruction on the earth – nothing is hidden from You

You are the Righteous Judge  – You reign forever!

You see the wicked and the ruins they have left behind.

Ruined families, ruined homes, ruined lives

You see the oppressed all over the earth, You do not ignore  their cries.

You are our refuge and stronghold in times of trouble.

I know Your name – I trust in You!

In the midst of trouble I can declare my praise to You

No matter what, I have salvation in You!

The wicked of this world will fall into the pit they have dug for themselves.

You are a God who is just in all of His ways.

You see the wicked who draw their nations far from You, who choose to forget you.

I know this, You will not forget the needy, they can have hope even in days of deep trouble.

Put every nation in their place Lord, let them know they will not go on forever.

 You arise, in You there is no end.   – Amen

Praying the Psalms Project Psalm 7

I read this over the weekend – 10,000 Child Migrants Missing  I am sick at heart and burning with anger.  What kind of people do this?  Steal children.  Take 10,000 children and sink them into deep dark depths of human trafficking – selling them for sex.

The Innocent

The words enemy and wicked take on a whole new meaning to me.

Along with David –  I’m calling out for Justice today!

Psalm 7

A psalm of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning Cush of the tribe of Benjamin.

I come to you for protection, O Lord my God.
    Save me from my persecutors—rescue me!
If you don’t, they will maul me like a lion,
    tearing me to pieces with no one to rescue me.
O Lord my God, if I have done wrong
    or am guilty of injustice,
if I have betrayed a friend
    or plundered my enemy without cause,
then let my enemies capture me.
    Let them trample me into the ground
    and drag my honor in the dust. Interlude

Arise, O Lord, in anger!
    Stand up against the fury of my enemies!
    Wake up, my God, and bring justice!
Gather the nations before you.
    Rule over them from on high.
    The Lord judges the nations.
Declare me righteous, O Lord,
    for I am innocent, O Most High!
End the evil of those who are wicked,
    and defend the righteous.
For you look deep within the mind and heart,
    O righteous God.

10 God is my shield,
    saving those whose hearts are true and right.
11 God is an honest judge.
    He is angry with the wicked every day.

12 If a person does not repent,
    God will sharpen his sword;
    he will bend and string his bow.
13 He will prepare his deadly weapons
    and shoot his flaming arrows.

14 The wicked conceive evil;
    they are pregnant with trouble
    and give birth to lies.
15 They dig a deep pit to trap others,
    then fall into it themselves.
16 The trouble they make for others backfires on them.
    The violence they plan falls on their own heads.

17 I will thank the Lord because he is just;
    I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.

psalm 7

Lord, I come to you today asking for protection not only for me and my house, but for children across the world who are being stolen, abused and sold.

 Rescue them, Lord!

I know that they must feel as if they are being pulled apart by lions.

Rescue them!

Lord, we all sin and fall short.  Each guilty of injustice or betrayal of a friend.  The list can go on and on.

You are the judge and You declare who is in right standing with You.  When You look upon Your children – You see the righteousness of Your Son – Jesus.

You see the evil and wicked across the nations, the kind of wicked that steals children.

Let Your anger burn against them –

You see injustice.  You see stolen children.  You see the innocent suffering.

You know the ones who have taken them, who are evil and wicked.

Why do You let this go on?

You see into our hearts and minds and see who is righteous.  Not one person can hide their heart from You.

You are the shield that defends us – saving those that have true and right hearts.

You are an honest judge, Lord.  Every day You see the wicked and are angry with them.

If a person does not repent.

Your sword will be sharpened

Your bow string will bend – You will shoot arrows of fire.

Are You waiting for the wicked to repent?

How will they know of You, unless we tell them.

Are You waiting for us to tell them?

The wicked plan evil, are filled with trouble, full of lies and are busy setting traps for others.

You will cause them to fall right into their own trap.  All of their evil will backfire on them.

I thank you Lord, that You are just and seek justice.  I give You praise because You are the Lord who is higher than all of this evil.  I ask for Your rescue and justice today!

Amen and Amen

Praying the Psalms Project Psalm 5

Poor David, He sure is worried about his enemies.  I guess if I were on the run, fearing for my life, I would be worried about them too.  Even in the midst of this trial – his faith remains in his God.

Then I think of the many persecuted Christians living through out the world, who have physical enemies, just as David did.   They have suffered and sacrificed to follow Jesus, with desperate prayers burning in their hearts and on their lips.  They do not give up and they still follow Christ with abandon.

I want to be honest, I have not suffered to follow Christ.  Not like them.

Who are my enemies?

– Fear – Unbelief – Doubt – Distraction – Pride –

Just to name a few

Psalm 5

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by the flute.

O Lord, hear me as I pray;
    pay attention to my groaning.
Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,
    for I pray to no one but you.
Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.
    Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.

O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness;
    you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked.
Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence,
    for you hate all who do evil.
You will destroy those who tell lies.
    The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house;
    I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.
Lead me in the right path, O Lord,
    or my enemies will conquer me.
Make your way plain for me to follow.

My enemies cannot speak a truthful word.
    Their deepest desire is to destroy others.
Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
    Their tongues are filled with flattery.
10 O God, declare them guilty.
    Let them be caught in their own traps.
Drive them away because of their many sins,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
    that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
12 For you bless the godly, O Lord;
    you surround them with your shield of love.

Psalm 5

Father, thank you for hearing me when I cry out to You.  Some days as I see the suffering in this world, I have no words, only groans.

Never will I pray to anyone but You, Lord.  Never.

I come back to You every morning.  A new day with new challenges.  I am excited as I wait to hear Your voice.

I know that You do not tolerate sinful wickedness – no, not one bit.  Some days I try to close my eyes to it all – to the proud and the evil, the liars and deceivers, murders and abusers.  Those that say and do unspeakable things.

I know that you have called me to pay attention and to pray with my eyes open.

Thank you that I live in a country where I can go to Your House and worship with arms wide open.

Help me not to stumble off of Your Path, so I will not be consumed by my enemies.

I really need You to make Your path for me – straight and plain, so that I don’t become lost.

Teach me to be alert, that I will not fall into the trap of false flattery.  It does me no good at all.

Many will struggle against You and lead lives of destruction,  I don’t want to be one of them.

You are my safe place, Lord.  May Your praise always be on my lips, forever and always!

Thank you, that Your protection has me covered.  Because I love You – I am filled with joy, no matter my circumstances.

Help me to live a life set apart to You, that I will always feel Your shield of love surround me.

Amen and Amen

Praying the Psalms Project – Psalm 4

I am finding as I pray through the Psalms that God is showing me more and more –

Who He Is

He’s reminding me the He fills every hole we might have.

Psalm 4

For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by stringed instruments.

Answer me when I call to you,
    O God who declares me innocent.
Free me from my troubles.
    Have mercy on me and hear my prayer.

How long will you people ruin my reputation?
    How long will you make groundless accusations?
    How long will you continue your lies? Interlude
You can be sure of this:
    The Lord set apart the godly for himself.
    The Lord will answer when I call to him.

Don’t sin by letting anger control you.
    Think about it overnight and remain silent. Interlude
Offer sacrifices in the right spirit,
    and trust the Lord.

Many people say, “Who will show us better times?”
    Let your face smile on us, Lord.
You have given me greater joy
    than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine.
In peace I will lie down and sleep,
    for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.

Oh Lord, Even though I am steeped in sin, like an old tea bag, through Jesus you find me innocent.   I am so very thankful for that.

No matter what trouble comes my way, You hear me when I call.  You set me free from the things that hound me.

It is true, people will speak out against me, not agree with me even lie about me. What can I do about it? Not much!

But you, Lord –

You set me apart, close to you.

You answer me when I call.

Help me to hear Your voice above all the other noise in life.

Many days, anger and impatience get the best of me. Teach me to sleep on it, before I say one word.

When I come into Your presence in worship, in thanksgiving, with the first fruits of my day help me to have the right attitude.

I know I can trust you Lord, above all else.

So often I ask you to make everything perfect, to make every day great.  I want You smiling on me all the time.

You give me something greater.  Greater than the earthly perfection I am looking for.

You give me peace.  So much peace that I can lay my head down at night, close my eyes and sleep, knowing that you keep me safe from each day’s troubles.  Amen and Amen
