Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist
It has been a long time since I’ve worn a belt… junior high maybe. My pants have no problem staying up without any help. One thing about belts – they do tell the truth. A physical belt wraps around your waist and buckles or it doesn’t. Truth!
This belt is not going to measure our waists, yay! It always fits, never lies and it tells us only truth. We can measure everything against it.
Let’s talk about truth. We have to make a decision as to what the source of our truth is. For me, a Christ follower, my truth comes from God, his living breathing Word. Nothing is more comforting than knowing where truth in life is found, everything else can be measured by it.
In this case our outfit is going to build upon our belt, God’s Truth. Everything that is said about us, or that we say about ourselves must measure against this belt.
Does it measure up?
There will be many voices in our life claiming to be truth. Our own voice, our family, our friends, our enemies, the enemy of our soul (yes he has a voice), the many media sources that invade our lives. They will all claim to be the voice of truth. They will try to influence our life. They can, but only if we let them.
When those voices say things like this:
You are not good enough…
We can use our belt of truth as our measure, as our guide. I encourage you… read these next statements out loud to yourself. There is power in reading God’s Truth out loud.
To you can’t …I can say…I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
This may look too big and too hard for me to accomplish, but Jesus, you live in me and with your strength I can do anything!
To your afraid …I can say…He will cover me with his feathers. He will shelter me with his wings. His faithful promises are my armor and protection. I will not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. I will not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at my side, though ten thousand are dying around me, these evils will not touch me. Psalm 91:4-8
I will not fear, you have me covered Lord, no matter what comes my way!
To your not good enough…I can say…I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:14
Lord, I am not sure what you had in mind when you were creating me, but I choose to trust that you knew what you were doing!
This week when voices from everywhere try to overwhelm us. Let us reach for our first piece of armor, our belt, the Word of God. Measure every word against it, truth will shine through until it is the only voice we hear.
