That is what her name means and it fits her so well. She was a well of Living Water, a Jewish woman who was married to a Gentile, who also grabbed a hold of the Gospel of Jesus. She is a rare find. She had much to conquer in her life, in order to raise her son Timothy to know the Full Gospel.
We find Eunice in a Roman colony of Lystra, most likely settling in her husband’s neck of the woods. It is believed that Eunice’s Gentile husband had died leaving her as a widow, since his name is never mentioned. This meant that she was a Jewish woman living in a non-Jewish community. There would have been no synagogue near and regular worship with her fellow believers would not have been possible. Eunice was going against the social grain all around her, that takes strength.
The only person Eunice had as spiritual support is her mother, Lois, a precious grandmother. These two ladies poured into the life of young Timothy, their wells overflowed. Eunice holds on to her beliefs, she holds on to scripture. She is diligent in teaching the Word of God to her son, Timothy. Pouring Living Water into his heart, preparing him for all God has in store for his life.
Scripture tells us that we have a spiritual weapon and that weapon is the Sword of the Spirit, the very Word of God, Eunice, knowing that life would be a battle, made sure that Timothy had an arsenal full.
How about our children, what is in their arsenal for their life battle. Is it a quarter full, half? That will not do, their arsenal must be full and we, like Eunice, are the ones to fill it. It is our responsibility and we must take it to heart.
Have we been diligent is planting the Word of God in our children’s hearts?
Could our children list the Ten Commandments?
How will they have a clear picture of sin, if it is not named?
Do they know a scriptures that will encourage them, when the are afraid, sad, lonely, sick, lacking confidence?
With young children we can make learning scripture fun. Music, art, games there is no limit to how creative we can be. With teens, I have found that praying God’s Word with them to be powerful. As Nike would say… we have to Just Do It. We must! Our children’s spiritual lives depend on it. Ask the Lord for creative ideas in teaching your children His Word; He will give them to you!
Like Eunice, growing our children up in the ways of the Lord will not be socially popular. It may be difficult, time consuming, inconvenient, but we must be like a Conquering Well, the Living Water of Christ in us, pouring out over our children. We must set the spiritual tone for our homes.
There are many women today who are setting the spiritual tone in their homes, alone. Dad is either not there or not a believer. You are the Well in your home…declare that your house will be a house that serves the Lord. It will be hard, and frustrating at times, you will feel like your Well has run dry. Be refreshed in knowing, the Lord is in the mix with you, don’t give up!
Something I love so much about Eunice, she was not steeped in ‘religion’. How do we know this? When Paul came, and shared the Gospel of Jesus with Lois, Eunice and Timothy, they believed. They knew scripture for themselves and were ready, when Paul came to tell them of the Messiah, Savior, Jesus, who brought them forgiveness of sin.
Paul takes Timothy under his wing and prepares him to become the evangelist that he is called to be…But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. 2 Timothy 4:5
In scripture, Paul referrers to Timothy as, his beloved son, the Lord brought Timothy a spiritual Dad. As praying Moms, we can know this… God will fill the voids in our children’s lives.
How Eunice must have rejoiced as she watched fruit overflow in her son’s life. She was a Conquering Well in her home, just as we can be in ours, when we let the Word of God pour over ourselves and our families. Fruit will come!
Timothy’s name means ~ One who fears the Lord
Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.
In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls, but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.
Let’s make these scriptures our prayer for our children
Insert your child’s name in the blanks
Lord, may ________ be humble and fear You, thank you that when he/she does ________ will have riches, honor and life. Teach _________ to preserve his/her life and stay far from snares and pitfalls. Help me Lord, to train up _______ in the way that he/she should go, that when __________ is old, he/she will not turn away.
