19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
I count them my enemies.
I am guessing that David had some enemies, whom he had some strong feelings about. Some who were out for his blood an evil people who hated David and the God he served.
Evil is all over the world. Pick up a paper, watch the news there is evil at every turn. We are allowed to ask God to bring His righteous justice. We can be angry, we can stand for justice. Just as David was as he wrote this Psalm.
Boko Haram, evil in every sense of the word. They are robbing people of their lives, their dignity and their freedom. We must pray against them and speak against them. When I look at this picture a burning rises up within me. I cannot and will not keep silent.
ISIS a group so evil and yet so cowardly they cover themselves from head to toe, that their identities will be kept secret. Do they think the Lord does not know who they are, that they will escape His coming judgment?
These are the kind of people David is talking about, they existed then and they exist now. We God’s children must stand for justice. And then there is this…
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
While we stand for justice and hate evil, we need to keep our hearts in check. The lines can become very gray. We never want to get caught up in hate. That is how groups like these are formed, hate that is burning out of control.
Like David, we must say to the Lord. Search me God, know my heart. Test me, and know my anxious thoughts. See and show me any offensive way in me. Then we must be ready to take the Lord’s correction. We want to keep our heart right with Him, that we never become a people who hate people. Ever.
Why? Simple, Jesus died for us all. A great love, a great sacrifice. God sees, God knows those who do evil, they have His attention. Some will repent and come to know Jesus and some will not. God still knows. We must trust Him.
The Cross searches our hearts and reveals everything – Sin, Judgement, Justice, Love, Forgiveness. The Cross is the way to a life everlasting…the choice is ours.
